In the world of high school basketball, the St. James Sharks have been on a tear this year. The Sharks are 12-5 and they are 2-1 in the region, with the only loss coming from North Myrtle Beach, but that was at North Myrtle.

Senior guard Caleb Duggan scored his 1,000 career point at St. James against South Florence and was named the athlete of the week by grand strand sports.

“I am so proud that Caleb has stuck with basketball, and I love the role he has taken with the team, with his increase in rebounds and assists, and his decrease in points,” said Coach Monty Carr.

Even though the season is almost over for the Sharks, they still have another half of a season to kick it into gear, and show other teams how the Sharks play basketball.

“Unfortunately, the next half of the season counts, we are eager on the challenges that will come,” said Coach Carr.

The Sharks started the season at 6th in the state, but with a loss in the region they fell to 9th. “It’s a good thing to be ranked now, but our goal is to be number one at the end of the season,” said Duggan.

The Sharks played Myrtle Beach at home in a head to head rivalry on Monday. Both teams started out with really good defense but with the Sharks being able to break the Myrtle Beach defense for a little bit and take the lead 11-7 at the end of the first quarter. As the Shark fans get loud, the team started out the second quarter with a run and gun type of offense. The Sharks took over the quarter as they went into halftime with a 26-14 lead.

Coming out from halftime the coaches wanted to save Caleb so he wouldn’t get injured, yet the Seahawks would see that and capitalize, as they made a run and came within one point with only one quarter left to play in a heated battle. As the beginning of the fourth quarter and the Shark fans getting their “shark fins” up, ready to cheer on their team. Duggan and the Sharks would end the game on a 13-8 run and get the W in region play. Duggan had 15 points with 6 rebounds, Tre McCallum had 17 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, and Senior Nehemiah Stafford also went into the double figures with 11 points.

After a scare against Myrtle Beach, the Sharks look forward to the big game of the season, at home on Friday the 18th against the Socastee Braves, in the Battle of 707 continues. The two teams played earlier in the year, with St. James winning by 18 points. Even with Caleb only scoring 8 points in that game due to injury, St. James played like a championship team with three other players in double figures.

“When everybody gets involved we play great and no one can stop us,” said Senior Duggan.
