NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year
by Tanner Hale
Robert Griffin III deserves to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year for a multiple amount of reasons. He is by far the most deserving and worthy of this great honor.
Robert Griffin III is in the running with Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck, two other rookie quarterbacks who started for their respected teams this year. I criticize Andrew Luck for three major reasons. First off, Luck threw 19 interceptions (1 in the playoffs). The second part I criticize is that Andrew Luck had a 54.1% completion percentage. People tend to praise him for what he has done to the Indianapolis Colts and leading them to 11 wins and a playoff berth, but eight out of the 11 wins he has come from Tennessee(2), Jacksonville(2), Kansas City, Cleveland, Miami, and Buffalo. I believe that any quarterback who throws 19 interceptions and has under a 55% completion percentage shouldn’t be worthy or deserving of any award.
The other man is Russell Wilson, this one is a lot more comparable to RG3 than Luck, but this one is short and simple. Russell Wilson and Robert Griffin III both had exactly 393 attempts thrown this year, Wilson went 252-393 and Robert Griffin III went 258-393, which clearly means that Griffin III had a better completion percentage. Russell Wilson threw for 3,118 yards in the regular season; Griffin III threw for 3,200 yards in only 15 games (missed @Cleveland). Robert Griffin III broke Cam Newton’s record with the most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback at 815 yards (previous record was 706), which means Russell Wilson didn’t have the most rushing yards out of the rookie quarterbacks.
This award will go to a quarterback and I believe that Robert Griffin III will win it because he has performed more than the other two quarterbacks. Remarkably, Griffin III has only thrown 5 interceptions, 20 touchdowns, rushed for 7, ran for 815 yards, thrown for 3,200 yards, and led the Washington Redskins to an NFC East division title. Andrew Luck has thrown 4,393 yards, but has thrown 19 interceptions and has a 54.1% completion percentage, and Russell Wilson has just simply not put up the stats Robert Griffin III has.
