So I’ve recently learned about this newish band that goes by Foxygen from Westlake Village, California. Foxygen was formed in 2005 and consists of two core members: Jonathan Rado and Sam France. They feature many 60s psychedelic rock influences such as The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan. You might even hear some Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones in a few of Foxygen’s songs.
“Foxygen sounds like The Velvet Underground and The Rolling Stones and they’re definitely influenced by a lot of other bands like The Doors. From album to album their sound changes” said junior Ethan Johnson.
The band self released many EPs between 2007 and 2011, but didn’t release a full album until 2012 after they had been signed to a contract the previous year. Their songs that were released as singles include “Shuggie,” “San Francisco,” and “Make It Known.”
Earlier this year they came out with an album called ‘We are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic.’ Their first full length album came out last year and is titled ‘Take the Kids off Broadway.’
Freshman Anastasia Kasko said “They are a really underground band that more people should know about. They deserve more recognition that they get. Personally, I believe they are a fantastic group that needs to be famous amongst all.”
The band has captured the sound of the 60s wonderfully. They have the tone of voice, the instrumental sound, and even the nonchalantly written lyrics that have a hidden meaning.
Though they can’t exactly beat the real thing, I think it’s amazing that they can take so many different sounds and change-ups and put them together so that it sounds like one amazing ball of 60s music. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is a fan of any of the previously mentioned bands.
