It's becoming the most popular dance around the country; some say it's even bigger than Gangnam Style. We also know exactly what I'm talking about because everyone's doing it.
Urban Dictionary's definition of the Harlem Shake is, “An eccentric upper body dance move that involves the shaking of the upper torso and shoulders”. The original “Harlem Shakers” were known as the Sunny Coast Shake, five teenagers from Queensland, Austrailia.
The Harlem Shake is a dance style, and usually lasts about 30 seconds. It consists of an excerpt from Baauer's song “The Harlem Shake”, and a group of people. Typically, the dance is recorded on video, and published on social networking websites, such as YouTube and Facebook.
In a video of the Harlem Shake you will discover a single person, dancing around a crowd of oblivious people during the first 15 seconds. After the bass drops in the second half of the video, the entire group of people dances in an obnoxious manner until the end of the video. In an average Harlem Shake video, you will also notice most of the participants are in costumes or little attire.
When asked about his thoughts about this new sensation, sophomore Mark Coyner said, “I think it's cool, but only if the people pull it off right”.
Why has the Harlem Shake become so popular in such a short period of time? Statistics show that on February 10, 2013, the upload rate of the Harlem Shake reached up to 4,000 uploads per day, and by February 11, 44 million views were accumulated on various Harlem Shake videos.
Because of the rising acknowledgement, Baauer’s single reached #1 on the iTunes America chart and #2 on iTunes in the UK and Australia on February 15th, 2013.
On the other hand, some people don't find the dance very entertaining.
After sophomore Ambie Whited saw the video for the first time on YouTube, she said, “I got four words: stupid, and seems lame”.
Various groups have shot a Harlem Shake video of their own, including the staff of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, a squadron of the Norwegian Army, and many public schools, such as our own. It's the new Internet sensation that is sweeping the nation.
