It's that thing you've never heard of.
“Good morning Hank, it’s Tuesday.”
“Good morning John, it’s Friday.”
These may seem like ordinary greetings to you but to a million YouTube subscribers these words are one of the best parts of the week. John and Hank Green have created an online community based on philanthropy, philosophy, scientific curiosity and nerdiness.
John and Hank Green are two brothers who live 1,772 miles apart. IN 2006 the brothers had an idea: to have one year of textless communication between them. On January 1, 2007 ‘Brotherhood 2.0’ was launched on YouTube. In these daily videos the brothers talked about everything from personal daily events and the newest Harry Potter novel to politics and philosophy. Viewers quickly grew fond of the quirky author and his chemist/musician brother.
The first Brotherhood 2.0 video to go viral was a ballad Hank wrote and performed for the impending release of the final Harry Potter novel, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” entitled “Accio Deathly Hallows.” Potterheads went nuts over the song and Brotherhood 2.0’s fan base doubled. When the year of textless communication ended the brothers decided to keep the magic going by changing the title of the channel to the Vlogbrothers and putting out biweekly videos that are now watched by over a million subscribers known as Nerdfighters.
Senior Paige Shealy said “I love that they use their views to support good causes like ‘The Project for Awesome.’ They really go out of their way to give back.”
If you are a Harry Potter fan, take an interest in random facts about science and history, enjoy songs about quarks, and dedicate a lot of energy trying to reduce “world suck” then you might be a Nerdfighter. If the the phrases “French the llama” and “dude no edge” ring a bell to you, you may be a nerdfighter.
Senior Amber Bishop said “I knew I was a Nerdfighter when I heard Hank’s music. He is so clever and unapologetically nerdy!”
Reading one of John Green’s four popular novels may also guide you to the Vlogbrothers channel. There is a quick test to see if what you’re reading is John Green: did you start off laughing and are now totally devastated? If not, it’s definitely not John Green.
The Vlogbrothers have branched out into several other educational channels, including “Crash Course,” “SciShow,” “Mental Floss,” and “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.” Hank Green even started a YouTuber convention called “VidCon” where YouTuber’s meet to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects.
