6:00 AM

by Haley Olds
10 days a year, 5 per semester, the rest…well it’s not history; it’s actually Saturday school.

I don’t know if it’s just me but sometimes I need a day every couple weeks. I need a day to myself when I’m really busy and need to cool down for a bit or if I’ve had a couple bad days in a row.

What about when were sick but not sick enough to go to the doctor? What if I’m throwing up or if I just have a headache and what about girl stuff?! Yeah, I said it and I don’t even regret it.

Okay seriously, reason one plus reason two equals more than five days per semester and me equals ticked off because what the heck? Shouldn’t I get to stay home if I want to? In college the school won’t be checking if you’re attending classes or not. Isn’t high school supposed to prepare you for college?

Junior Sam Ard said, “I think that it’s a parent note and you have a reasonable excuse then it should be excused.”

And what if I have good grades? A’s and B’s and I just want to skip a day? No, no way. Truancy plan for you!

We’re in a recession. Some people, me included, can’t afford to go to the doctor every single time were sick. I don’t want to waste my dad’s little money on a trip to the doctor for having a common cold that the doctor couldn’t even fix.

Sophomore Emily Smith said, “Everyone gets sick and they can’t always go to the doctor to get an excuse for getting their annual cold. Right now, I am sick and I don’t feel good so I don’t want to be at school but I can’t miss because then I will be over my absences.”

I feel strongly that if I, or anyone else, misses days but keeps their grades together and does all their make-up work then we should be able to miss as much as we want. Granted I understand more than 30 days is a bit out of hand but regulate it due to person not to every human being in a school.

It’s like the teacher giving everyone a pop quiz because two girls in the back were talking. It is not fair.
